Brian Set the story in London because he feels as though he has a connection to the city. Brian Selznick is an American illustrator and author best known as the writer of The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Wonderstruck, The Marvels and Kaleidoscope. David Milne is also sort of like Uncle Albert because he keeps the house up and running so that this family is not forgotten in their home. This is the condition Albert keeps the house in to make it seem like the family is still living there. He proceeds to walk up the stairs and he thinks he is hearing footsteps but there is no one around. When Joseph walks into the house, he hears a strange chirping noise in the corner of the room as if there is a bird there, but there is nothing.

Albert Nightingale directly correlates to Dennis Servers because Uncle Albert keeps his house as if there was a family living there with him. In The Marvels, Joseph arrives in London from previously running away to find his uncle, Albert Nightingale. Dennis Servers created a silk weaver house in the 1800's and the house is kept as if the family still lives there. Their names are Dennis Servers, and David Milne. His newest book is called The Marvels and In The Marvels, Brian based the main characters off of two living people. Rating The Invention of Hugo Cabret This story is about a 12 year old boy who’s father had passed away when the boy was just young. This book went on to also become a movie called Hugo. (Sept.Brian Selznick, born in New Jersey in 1966, has created multiple fantastic books including, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Wonderstruck, and The Marvels. Brian is most well known for his book The Invention of Hugo Cabret which went on to win the Caldecott medal in 2008. Viewed narrowly, it’s a love letter to the Dennis Severs’ House, but readers won’t need preexisting knowledge of the museum to enjoy this powerful story about creating lasting art and finding family in unexpected places. Uncle Albert, who lives in a home maintained in much the same way as the Dennis Severs’ House, has been reclusive ever since losing his “beloved” to AIDS, but Joseph and the neighbor girl he befriends, Frankie, refuse to stay away. The next 200 pages are prose, jumping forward to 1990 when a boy named Joseph Jervis has run away from boarding school in search of an uncle he has never met. As he did in his Caldecott Medal–winning The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Selznick uses a telescoping point of view with great success, bringing the audience effortlessly from the general to the specific, from wide shot to close-up.

The first 500 pages are double-page pencil drawings that (almost) wordlessly tell the story of the Marvel family, beginning with a 1766 shipwreck and following successive generations as they gain fame in London’s theater community. Selznick imagines an alternate backstory for a real English tourist attraction, the Dennis Severs’ House: 10 meticulously curated rooms that suggest what life might have been like for a family of Huguenot silk weavers in 18th-century London.
